Re: Hi I'm CaliChrome
I think horses are so majestic and I love watching them. I have been horse riding a few times.
I am still a little scared of them though and I know they can sense it.
They are just so big

Re: Hi I'm CaliChrome
But they are quite often afraid of you! They are herbivores and prey to many animals so they are "wired" to be fearful of humans (carnivores). They also see differently than you do so unless someone has taught them that they are bigger, they don't know it. To see close, they lower their heads to look out of the top of their eyes and to see distances, they raise their heads to look out of the bottom of their eyes. To make friends, do not try to pet them in the middle of their head unless they know you as your hand will not be in focus and they will be fearful of it. Hold your hand out below their nose, palm up so they can sniff you. Scratch under their chin where they can't. Most (not all) love that and will be your friend for life! They learn others by smell and a usual horse greeting is to blow in each others nose to get a good whiff!

Re: Hi I'm CaliChrome
Thank you for the information- I did not know any of those things about horses.
Puts things in a little different perspective...
They really are so pretty. I like the ones that are a light tan with a dark mane.

Reddish tan with a black mane and tail = Bay
Reddish tan with mane and tail same as or close to body color = Chestnut/Sorrel (depending on the breed)
Other colors include but not limited to:
Palomino - golden color body white mane and tail
Grey - starts life as some other color and grey hairs come in, get lighter with age to look white but have dark skin under hair coat
White - true white is rare and has pink skin under body color, this horse starts out life as white.
Black - true black is rare.
Dark Bay or Brown - sometimes mistaken for black.
Buckskin - Golden body with black mane and tail. (Other variations on this are dun and grulla (sp?).)
Roan - Often mistaken for grey but a true roan has a solid head color. It never greys out and doesn't go white. Comes in one of two shades, "red" or "blue".
I won't go into all the "parti" colored horses like pintos and appys here. Not an expert.

Re: Hi I'm CaliChrome
I have a Buckskin .... Her nickname is Rock-it... because her registered name is horrid, lol. Got her when she was 11 months old, she's 12 now. She's around 3-4 in these pics I think... lost almost all my pics of her when my house burned down :(cylentlea123 wrote:Buckskin- That's the one!!! OMG they are so so pretty!!

She is lovely! I'm glad you didn't lose her in the fire! Don't you just love when they dapple out like the first picture?
Yes, some people don't seem to have much sense when it comes to naming horses. You could probably get her name changed if she has never had a foal (if you really wanted).

Re: Hi I'm CaliChrome
I've never bred her, I haven't even put her papers in my name lol... nice to know I could possibly change her name tho.
She changes color a lot... light to dark/dark to light, and she dapples out twice a year. I'm not sure exactly what causes the dapples... my Grampa always said it was a sign of good health/good feed. I had a Palomino mare when I was a kid that dappled out too.
I just made myself really sad rummaging thru an old photobucket account.. lotta pics of things/pets I no longer have
